How Cost-of-Living Adjustments Affect Your Benefits

VA disability compensation rates increase each year based on cost-of-living adjustments (COLA). In 2025, veterans are seeing a 2.5% increase in monthly payments.

Here are a few examples of how that affects real-world benefits:

  • A veteran with one child at 30% will receive $579.42 in 2025 — up from $565.59 in 2024.
  • A veteran rated 60% with a spouse, two parents, and one child will now receive $1,821.93, up from $1,777.77.
  • A veteran rated 70% with one child (no spouse/parents) will see a benefit of $1,858.19, up from $1,813.29.
  • A 100% disabled veteran with a spouse, two parents, and one child will now receive $4,544.23, up from $4,433.39.

These annual adjustments help ensure veterans and their families keep pace with inflation.

When Will You Receive Your VA Payment?

VA disability compensation is paid monthly, typically on the first business day of each month. If the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are made the business day before.

  • Each month covers the previous month’s benefits (e.g., February’s deposit covers January).
  • Direct deposit is the fastest and most secure way to receive your benefits.
  • Use the 2025 schedule below to plan ahead and stay on top of your monthly finances.

Understanding VA Disability Ratings

Your disability rating directly affects how much monthly compensation you receive. The rating reflects how much your service-connected condition impacts your everyday life and ability to work. Ratings range from 0% to 100%, in 10% increments.

If you have more than one condition, the VA combines them using a special formula—not just simple addition.

How Ratings Are Decided

The VA looks at medical evidence and how your condition affects your daily life. Each disability is evaluated using the VA rating schedule, which assigns percentages based on the severity and impact of your condition.

For example, if you have a knee injury, they’ll consider how much it limits your movement, pain levels, and how it affects your ability to work or stay active.
